Hodie Christus natus est

Cappella Amsterdam o.l.v. Daniel Reuss

Regina Albanez - theorbo

Menno van Delft - organ

A pure Christmas concert with compositions by Heinrich Schütz and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, two 17th century composers who are dear to conductor Daniel Reuss. Reuss has conducted many special performances with the music of these two maestros. Berliner Zeitung wrote about one of these in 2013: ‘Mit mal tänzerisch schwingendem, mal rhetorisch dringlichem Zugriff erschloss Reuss den stilistischen Farbreichtum von Schütz’ Weihnachtshistorie.

The chosen works by Schütz originate from his hymnbookGeistliche Chormusik and are all in German, except the Hodie Christus natus est (Today Christ is born) that is sung in Latin. Next to the composition by Schütz also Sweelincks composition of the same text will sound in this concert. The diptych around Schütz and Sweelinck is completed with the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis by Arvo Pärt.
