Anthracite Fields

Cappella Amsterdam, the VU Chamber Choir and the American composer collective Bang on a Can All-Stars together present Julia Wolfe’s widely acclaimed epic Anthracite Fields. This five movement oratario is about the lot of the miners and the loss of the once flourishing mining industry in Pennsylvania. Wolfe thus created a kind of 'Requiem of the people', processing interviews with former miners, local stories and songs from the region into an impressive and topical composition.

The work Anthracite Fields is not complete without showing images by American filmmaker and designer Jeff Sugg who captured the bankrupt mining industry in his recordings. The images include impressive pictures by Lewis Hine, who captured the ‘breaker boys’ (the little boys who worked in the mines). His image design is completely black-and-white but for one single moment, when it is about flowers in the garden of a miner’s daughter.
