Anthracite Fields: Koorbiënnale 2017

Cappella Amsterdam & Bang on a Can All-Stars

Dutch première of groundbreaking Pulitzer Prize awarded work

Cappella Amsterdam and the prestigious American composer collective Bang on a Can All-Stars present the Dutch première of the widely praised epic Anthracite Fields. Composer Julia Wolfe received a Pulitzer Prize in 2015 for this groundbreaking vocal work.Anthracite Fields is about the loss of the once flourishing mining industry in Pennsylvania. Julia Wolfe, who originates from this area, created a kind of ‘Requiem of the people’ with Anthracite Fields, in which she processed, amongst others, interviews with former miners, local stories and songs from the region into an impressive and topical composition.

The work is performed while showing images from American filmmaker and designer Jeff Sugg who captured the bankrupt mining industry in his recordings.

Introduction to the concert includes an interview with Julia Wolfe from 14.00 to 14.30hrs.
