Mozart La Clemenza di Tito

Mozarts last opera

Two months before he passed away in December 1791, Mozart composed his last opera seria La Clemenza di Tito. This piece was a commission for the coronation of the German & Roman Catholic emperor Leopold II to become king of Bohemia. Mozart created Tito as a humanistic and merciful man and with doing so tried to satisfy the wishes of his clients to depict the new king as an enlightened ruler.

La Clemenza di Tito takes place in Rome in the year 79. Vitellia, daughter of emperor Vitellius who was discarded several years ago, hopes to reach the throne by seducing emperor Titus. But Titus has a crush on Berenice. Titus’ best friend, Sextus, on the other hand, has feelings for Vitellia. Enough subject matter for a story about friendship, power, revenge and mercy. Enough inspiration for Mozart to use in this opera.
